ABOUT NICK
Nick McLean - Historical Author
AN AWARD
Nick McLean is an author of historical fiction and non-fiction, with a particular interest in medieval Britain, military history, border warfare, and the lives of people caught in the machinery of power.
His first non-fiction book, A King’s Gamble: The Neville's Cross Campaign 1346, explored the turbulent world of medieval kingship, ambition, and political danger. He is also the author of Forged in the North, the first novel in the Border Warriors series, an historical fiction saga set against the violence, loyalty, and shifting allegiances of the Anglo-Scottish borderlands in the early fourteenth century.
Nick’s work blends detailed historical research with grounded, character-driven storytelling. His fiction focuses on the people beneath the crowns and banners: soldiers, outlaws, nobles, families, rivals, and survivors trying to make sense of brutal times. His non-fiction shares the same interest in power, personality, consequence, and the human cost of history.
Alongside his writing, Nick runs history-focused online content, including the Worms & Warriors YouTube and TikTok channels, where he discusses military history, historical campaigns, and the stories behind conflict.
Nick lives in County Durham with his family. When he is not writing, researching, or working on far too many projects at once, he can usually be found reading history, walking or planning the next book before the current one has had the decency to be finished.
